Chimanda Ngozi Adichie was born in Nigeria and is the author of Half of a Yellow Sun, which won the Orange Prize, Purple Hibiscus, and the collection of short stories, The Thing Around Your Neck. She was named one of the twenty most important fiction writers today under 40 years old by The New Yorker and was the recipient of a 2008 MacArthur Foundation Fellowship.

Charles Fried, the Beneficial Professor of Law, has been teaching at Harvard Law School since 1961. He was Solicitor General of the United States, 1985-89, and an Associate Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts, 1995-99. His scholarly and teaching interests have been moved by the connection between normative theory and the concrete institutions of public and private law. During his career at Harvard he has taught Criminal Law, Commercial Law, Roman Law, Torts, Contracts, Labor Law, Constitutional Law and Federal Courts, Appellate and Supreme Court Advocacy. In recent years Fried has taught Constitutional Law and Contracts. During his time as a teacher he has also argued a number of major cases in state and federal courts, most notably Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, in which the Supreme Court established the standards for the use of expert and scientific evidence in federal courts.

At the beginning of the year, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) announced two proposals to deal with an impending $185 million budge deficit for the next fiscal year.  Organizers for Students Against T Cuts reached out to the Northeastern University School of Public Policy & Urban Affairs and the Dukakis Center for Urban & Regional Policy to hold this teach-in to better outline the background of the MBTA’s financial situation, the engineering behind our physical system, innovative solutions, and the impact of public transportation on the Greater Boston community.

Designing Healthy Communities

Designing Healthy Communities <hr />

The Act FRESH campaign, together with Partners HealthCare and the Massachusetts Public Health Association, will be hosting an event at the state house on March 12th at 1pm to highlight the important relationship between public health and land use. Local zoning codes are the DNA of communities. That is why zoning reform legislation is a primary public health concern in Massachusetts, where the vast majority of these codes have not been updated in generations.

Please join us in State House Room 437 to learn how updated zoning codes can enhance thelivability of Massachusetts communities and increase access to health for residents of all ages. Speakers will address how various regions and communities of Massachusetts are finding innovative ways to design communities in order to make the healthy choice the easy choice.

Frances Moore Lappé is the author of 18 books including the three-million copy Diet for a Small Planet. EcoMind 2She is the cofounder of three organizations, including Food First: The Institute for Food and Development Policy and, more recently, the Small Planet Institute, a collaborative network for research and popular education seeking to bring democracy to life, which she leads with her daughter Anna Lappé. Frances and her daughter have also cofounded the Small Planet Fund, which channels resources to democratic social movements worldwide. Frances appears frequently as a public speaker and on radio, and is a regular contributor to Huffington Post and Alternet.
