FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

  • When does NUSO meet? The orchestra meets once a week on Tuesday nights from 6:00-8:30 pm.
  • Where does NUSO rehearse? We rehearse in the Fenway Center located on 77 St. Stephen Street.
  • Do we have to play an instrument to join the orchestra? Yes. Any of the following instruments are included in our orchestra: violin, viola, cello, upright bass, clarinet, flute, oboe, piccolo, bassoon, trumpet, tuba, trombone, french horn, timpani, etc. 
  • How many concerts are there? There are TWO concerts in a year, one at the end of the fall semester and one at the end of the spring semester.
  • When is the concert? The exact date differs from year to year but the fall concert is in December and the spring is performed in April.
  • Do we have to take lessons to join? Private lessons are recommended but not required.
  • If I’m on coop can I still join NUSO? Yes! As long as you don’t work Tuesday nigths from 6:00-8:30 p.m.
  • Is there a repair shop nearby? There are several music and instrument shops in the area, the two closest being Rutmans’ Violin’s on 265 Massachusetts Ave and Rayburn Music on 238 Huntington Avenue.
  • Can I take this as a class? Yes! Orchestra counts as a 1-credit class and all undergraduates are able and encouraged to register for orchestra as a class. 
  • What is the audition process like? Do I have to audition if I was a member last year? Auditions are required to assess your skill level so our conductor can seat you accordingly and select concert pieces that challenge and reflect our skill level. As there are many members that need to audition, please keep your piece short (Maximum of 4 minutes). All members, new and old, have to audition.
  • Are there tickets for the concert and do we have to purchase them? The concert is a free event and open to friends and family members. Just walk in to the Fenway Center, grab a program and enjoy the show.
  • What if I don’t have an instrument of my own? NUSO has a small stock of instruments we rent out to students per semester. Contact nuorchestra@gmail.com and fill out the instrument release form for more information about renting instruments.
  • Is there a place to store my instrument? NUSO has an instrument closet in the Fenway Center that only the E-board has keys to. The closet is locked during the week and opened during rehearsal Tuesday nights, but as this may not be conducive to practice you may want to become comfortable with leaving your instrument in your room.
  • Are there practice rooms available? Ryder Hall has several music rooms to practice in. It might get crowded with music major students and other people practicing, so check the availability before you go.
