Given the sheer size of the orchestra, it’s difficult for us to individually account for everyone. You signing in helps us, AND it’s your way to get

We are still collecting money for shirts if you have paid your dues. If you are interested and have not yet ordered, please give $5 to Jasmine along with your shirt size. In order to get a shirt, you must pay beforehand, as we will not be ordering extras! This is the last week to order a shirt.

We’re having another social! After rehearsal, stay and play darts with your friends. The two highest scoring musicians will each receive a free AMC movie ticket!

Practice rooms are on the third floor of Ryder (code: 2-5-1). As members of orchestra we have access to these rooms but, unfortunately, we are not able to reserve them in advance. Other practice room alternatives are empty academic classrooms at night, or reading through the music while listening to the recordings. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can also practice in your room!

Speaking of which…Please listen to the recommended recordings of our music! Evan has collected three different recordings as his recommendation. These recordings, along with Evan’s comments for them, have been sent to your emails.

We’re having a social! After rehearsal, stay and enjoy food from Boston Shawarma. There will be meat, as well as a vegetarian option, pita bread, hummus, and soda. Dinner is on us!

Get a BSO College Card! You can get them at the Res Life office in Speare for FREE, and then go to as many BSO concerts as you want during the season. The Res Life office is open Monday-Thursday 8:30 AM-7 PM and Friday 8:30 AM-5 PM. This is a fantastic opportunity to hear one of the best symphony orchestras  in what is possibly the best concert hall in the world!

Once you have a college card, you need to go to the symphony hall box office at least an hour before the concert starts and grab the ticket. Tickets for each week’s concerts are typically released on Mondays. The BSO schedule is attached as a PDF to this email; they will be playing Rimsky-Korsakov in January. Black out dates for the college card (dates that you cannot use the college card to go to a concert) for this semester are: November 1, 8, 15, 20, 21, 29.

Please bring short excerpts of one (or two) pieces you feel comfortable playing to the audition. You should arrive 10-15 minutes earlier than your assigned time, and expect to stay later. I know these times extend beyond our normal rehearsal time, which may  create complications for some of you. Please try to accommodate them if  at all possible as it will allow us to spend more time rehearsing music  next week!Please check your email before Tuesday at 5pm to see if there have been any changes to the schedule.  If you cannot make any of the times listed here, please email Evan (e.bennett@neu.edu) and Judi (nuorchestra@gmail.com) immediately to let us know.  Thanks for your patience!

We are starting a Big/Little Program this semester!  A returning member of orchestra will be paired with a new member,  typically of the same/similar major based on those that volunteer for the program.   Big/little combos will be given a list of non-compulsory activities to complete. First Fall 2014 Rehearsal!

The first rehearsal this semester with be Tuesday, September 10th. We will rehearse from 6 PM-8:30 PM at the Fenway Center, and anyone who is interested is welcome to come! Please arrive promptly at 5:45 PM so we can get everyone registered and begin on time. You will need your instruments for the first rehearsal. If you need to rent an instrument, please contact our manager, Melody Chang, at chang.me@husky.neu.edu.

Since this is the beginning of the academic year, everyone,  including previous members of the orchestra, will need to audition for  seats. Auditions for any instrument will be starting on September 9th, after the first rehearsal.  For those that are ready to audition, we  highly encourage you to take this opportunity!  It makes the rest of the audition process and seating decisions much easier for Evan.  Auditions will continue into the following week after the second rehearsal

We also have some information regarding dues. Dues will be $20 for 1 semester and $35 for 2 semesters until October 14th. After October 14th, dues will revert to the normal rate of $25 for 1 semester and $40 for 2 semesters. Remember to pay your dues early to save money! Our treasurer, Jasmine, will be collecting dues starting at the first rehearsal. If you are a member of multiple musical groups on campus, contact Jasmine at nusotreasurer@gmail.com about paying combined dues for your groups.

 

Remember to register for orchestra as a class! The class code is MUSC1906. This is important for filling out our roster and making attendance easier.

 

Sunny He, our wonderful Events Coordinator, will unfortunately be unable to participate in orchestra this semester.  As such, we will be having elections for the Events Coordinator position on E-Board.  This position is responsible for tour, organizing socials, and finding senior gifts – more specific info can be found on the website http://nuweb9.neu.edu/orchestra/?page_id=481.  Participating on the E-Board is a rewarding experience that not only  supplements your resume, but also gives you many opportunities to build  leadership skills and get more involved with the orchestra. Please email Judi and Ariel if you wish to run for the position, or if you want to know more about the position/E-Board!

Each candidate will provide a 1-2 minute speech before the orchestra, and the orchestra will then vote by majority. The concert is almost here; one and a half weeks till April 4th! TICKETS ARE ON SALE on MyTickets, accessible through your myNEU. All audience members are required to have a ticket for entry (orchestra members do not need one).  Till then, here will be our rehearsal schedule:
Tuesday 4/1: Rehearsal 6:00-8:30pm 
Wednesday 4/2: Dress Rehearsal (Time TBA)
Friday 4/4: Concert begins at 8 pm (Call Time TBA)

  • Sweaters are in! Please pick up your sweaters during rehearsal if you have paid $5 in advance for them! However, if you have outstanding dues, you cannot pick them up until dues are settled; dues are the reason why they’re so cheap :)

We will being having an UNO’s fundraiser buffet on Friday 3/28. Come down to have unlimited food and talk to the E-board and other orchestra members. Non-Orchestra  friends are welcome as well, so be sure to invite them too! It is $16 per person which is due to Jasmine this week!
