Lance Johnson

Lance Johnson has 25 years of experience leading newsrooms, and is currently working independently.  He heads Red Rabbit Communications and Design and has a particular interest in non-profit organizations.

Mr. Johnson is also editor of the Society for News Design’s 272-page annual book, The Best of News Design, a internationally-circulated publication. For two decades, he was managing editor and then executive editor of The Day Publishing Co. of New London, Conn., where he oversaw the news operations of the print and online editions.

The Day was named a New England Newspaper of the Year many times during Mr. Johnson’s tenure, and he started the company’s Special Publications Division, which now produces numerous magazines. Prior to accepting a position at The Day, Johnson was named executive editor of The Willimantic (Conn.) Chronicle, and worked as a reporter and editor for The Hartford Courant.

From 2002-2007, Mr. Johnson served as an elected member of the national Board of Directors of the Associated Press Managing Editors Association, where he was named to the executive committee, chairing regional programs. He was president of the New England Associated Press News Executives Association in 2004, and headed APME in Connecticut in 2000. Mr. Johnson is a co-founder of Tutoring for Success, a non-profit based in New London, Conn.
