Restoration Of 1935 Mural Depicting Lynching And Organized Labor

This month, work is beginning to restore a 77-year-old mural called “The Struggle of the South,” by the communist painter Joe Jones.  

The mural was painted in 1935 for Commonwealth College near the western Arkansas town of Mena and was displayed in an area where students ate.  The school was opened in 1923 to train leaders in the nation’s rapidly growing labor movement.
