Moore was the first black sheriff’s deputy in Washington Parish, LA. Exactly one year after his appointment, at the age of 34, he was shot to death in an ambush while driving home from duty.
White supremacist Ernest Ray McElveen was arrested for murder. However, charges were dropped. In 1990, the FBI reopened and then closed the case. In 2001, the case was again reopened and again stalled. McElveen died in 2003, but two additional suspects who might have been involved may still be alive. Unfortunately, law enforcement has not identified any additional suspects allegedly involved in the attack on Officers Moore and Rogers.
