Willie McDonald

Background

Willie McDonald, 26, was murdered by a mob in Newton County after being accused of entering a white woman’s home dressed in only underwear. He was apprehended and arrested on charges of disturbing the peace. Newspaper accounts reported that while en route to the county jail he struck a deputy, J.M. Wells, and when he tried to escape he was shot multiple times. McDonald’s death certificate gives his name as McDonnell, and states he was “resisting arrest.”

Legal Status

No charges were brought against the law enforcement officer who shot and killed McDonald.
