Noverta Robinson

Background

On October 17, 1946, Noverta Robinson was killed by a police officer in Walnut, MS. An NAACP file on the case includes the following account. On the day in question, Robinson was walking back to his home when Sheriff Wells stopped him and, allegedly, began beating him. Robinson was jailed and released on bail. He died a few hours after his release. One Dr. Tate of Ripley, MS, was asked to conduct an autopsy but he refused, making it necessary for the family to travel 45 miles, to Brownsville, where one Dr. Ford conducted the autopsy. That examination revealed there were four clots on the victim’s brain.

Robinson, 24-years-old, was married to Canana Gunn at the time of his death
