Maybelle Mahone

Background

Maybelle Mahone, a thirty-year old mother of six, was killed after “sassing” a white man. B.T. Dukes, a seventy-one-year old white farmer, shot Ms. Mahone using a shotgun. The shooting took place at her home, about two miles from Molena, Georgia.

Legal Status

Mr. Dukes was initially found guilty and received a life sentence on August 1, 1957. He was later found not guilty by reason of insanity.
