Mattie Green

Background

On May 16, 1960, a bomb exploded underneath the home of Jethro Green on Guyler Street in Ringgold, Georgia. Green’s wife, Mattie, died in the bombing. Mattie Green was a 32 year old mother of six. Georgia Governor Ernest Vandiver offered a reward for information related to this bombing.  However, neither the federal or local investigation of the matter led to charges against any suspects.

Legal Status

In 2007, the FBI re-examined this case in connection with the Civil Rights-Era Cold Case Initiative.  After a relatively thorough investigation in 2009 by the FBI, the Department of Justice closed the case due to lack of new leads, subjects and the lack of remaining forensic evidence.
