What materials do I need to submit along with my application?

Applicants should submit two letters of recommendation and unofficial transcripts from all of their undergraduate and graduate institutions. GRE scores are not required!  Applicants from non-English speaking countries must submit TOEFL/IELTS scores as part of the application.  A non-refundable application fee of $75 must also be submitted along with your application in order for it to be processed.

Are TOEFL scores needed for international students whose first language is not English? If so, what are the minimum score requirements?

International applicants from non-english speaking countries must demonstrate proficiency in writing and speaking English with a minimum TOEFL score of 90 for the Internet-based test or minimum IELTS score of 6.5. The English language requirement is waived for international applicants who hold an undergraduate or graduate degree from a U.S. institution.

I’ve been out of school for a while now, are professional letters of recommendation acceptable?

Although academic letters of recommendation are preferred, we will accept professional letters of recommendation if they are able to provide a sufficient character analysis and vouch for your professional and academic abilities.

Do I need experience in both Biology and Computer Science?

Absolutely not.  Most of our applicants have either a Biology, Life Science or Computer Science background (not both). The aim of our program is to build a greater breadth of knowledge in both life sciences and computer science. Many of our students have either a strong background in Biology and Biochemistry or a strong background in Math and Computing.  Our curriculum closely matches student needs, allowing students to become familiar with all facets of the program.

What is the cost of the program?

The cost of the program is $1,270 per credit hour, which amounts to $40,640 for the entire program.  Graduates from the Northeastern Bioinformatics program are highly employable and working in a job within their field of study, making it a sound investment.  Links to Northeastern tuition and fees information can be found here:

Do you accept transfer students?

Yes.  Students who are currently enrolled in other academic institutions and wish to apply to the Bioinformatics program are welcome.  If accepted, the student’s academic record will be reviewed to determine transfer credits. Students can transfer up to 9 graduate credits provided that they have not already been applied towards a previous graduate degree.

Are students eligible for campus jobs?

Yes.  All students, including international students, are eligible to attain campus jobs.

What if I don’t get a co-op?

At Northeastern, the graduate co-op is an outstanding real-world component that is one of the hallmarks of our program.  Although it is not guaranteed that students will receive a paid co-op, all students will be placed in one.  Students will receive guidance from a Graduate Co-op Coordinator throughout their search process and throughout the co-op.

Can I apply for part-time study in the Bioinformatics Program?

Yes. The M.S. in Bioinformatics program can be taken on a part-time basis. International applicants should consult the International Student and Scholar Institute here at Northeastern to make sure their visa type will allow them to be part-time students. The Bioinformatics program is intended to be a two-year program only when taken on a full-time basis.
